The Matra-Simba, then Talbot-Matra Rancho, was one of the first European “ludospaces”. It was a prelude to the compact MPVs that were so popular in the 90s and early 2000s. The Rancho is, in the words of its technical director, “the recipe for French toast applied to the automobile”. It incorporates elements from many other Simca and Chrysler models. The Rancho was produced in various versions, including a highly original “tarpaulin” version (called the “découvrable”). The rear retractable tarpaulin transforms the Rancho into a hybrid vehicle halfway between a utility vehicle and a buggy.
